Cardboard plane

Post by Nick M »

As part of our Eco-week I built a 2.2 metre cardboard motor glider

It's loosely based on John Beer's Zeitgeist (my favourite with reeds / propo) since the mid 70s...

It flies pretty well - but the motor had to go on an aluminium extension to get the CG somewhere sensible

I can see now why the Wright brothers didn't use much cardboard in their Flier...

There's that Yorkshire man again Phil :P

If you had a slightly smaller model or a larger cardboard box, you would have storage, transportation, & transmission all taken care of. Perfect for the Van !!

As an aside, does the van have a knickname / alias? Van Morrison, or Van Halen, or ??? Your mates on MZ could help, of course
Cheers,

Wayne

Tried this back in the 80's and gave it away as a bad idea, not worth the effort.
Whichever way one looks at it, cardboard is simply way too heavy.

Some IKEA packing has a kind of honeycomb style cardboard inner core, and light card/paper on both sides. That stuff is very strong, you can stand on it. Quite light, but possibly not light enough...

You are right - cardboard it stupid and if it hadn't been Eco-Week I wouldn't have done it (and had a big box)

The motor is very heavy and already on an aluminium extension.

I tried to keep the weight down at the back end - but no joy

It's an all moving fin (easy way to replace with a depron one if really heavy back end)

Does fly well
