Mode Zero

As CL is where I started out, and as I have a perfectly good Fox 15 that I bought from H.J.N brand new in 1970something, I thought I'd build myself another CL plane and take this nostalgia thing way too far. Then I spotted a Fox 35 on ebay that was not being shown much interest, probably because of the RC carb. Now it is here in the workshop and with a bit of luck a Fox 19 of a similar age to the other two will be along shortly.

The 35 needs a few minor parts, but looking inside it has run a fair bit if the carbon / oil deposits in the combustion chamber are anything to go by, so that's encouraging, hopefully the 19 will be a good'un too.

But, what to build? The selection of kits is a bit limited, lots of tiddlers (must unearth the DC Wasp) and a few good looking big'uns, but not much in the middle. The selection of plans offers the opposite problem with almost too many to choose from.

So, the search begins, both for the models and for somewhere to fly them.

Phantom Mite is a classic for 0.8cc motors.

There were also quite a few designs for 1 - 1.5cc powered combat wings.

Can't beat a Peacemaker for 2.5 - 3.5cc motors

All very quick builds and robust.

Anyone have any recommendations for an easy to build electric control line sport stunter? I'm looking for something that can do reasonable aerobatics (not competition-grade, just for fun), probably on roughly 55-foot lines and ideally using a standard-ish LiPo size such as a 1300 or 2200 3-cell or similar.

Peacemaker.. you could easily modify the wing to house the lipo...

I've yet to fly the C/L model I built to go with a given PAW 1.49..... my excuse is that I don't have any lines....

I have some you can have Col.. And possibly a handle.....

As soon as you’d believe that, somebody will come up with a better fool....

Problem is that if you’re a rather experienced pilot, you could build almost anything and making it fly well.
I’m still close to that, having just under 50 years of F2B (the F3A of CL, for reference) under my belt.
But those that are trying to get back into CL after some decades would be better off with a sturdy, trainer like design.
It’s no fun making 3 lap flights and having to re glue the whole shebang time after time.
I therefore advise against most fragile wings.
There is, however a trainer (.15 - .19) that has a wing, built up like the old combat wings from the early seventies.
You could litarally plant those at full bore, pull them from the topsoil, clean the engine (Oliver Tiger) with a fresh squirt of fuel, bend the propblades back forward, one flick and go again...
If you’re interested, I’ll see what I can do.
My CL buddy Henk has drawn up several variations on the ‘ACE trainer’, we’re using when teaching CL.
And in between we’d do a rough sort of F2B program (entirely!), so in the right hands it’s capable to do some amazing flying....
Max knows first hand, as we did some training sessions with really good RC pilots and I had most of them on their hands and knees after several laps.....
