Thanks Paul ;) . Enjoyed the quick views of the tx's & the genteel "oh no" when about to crash - definitely not what I'm used to hearing (or muttering  ) in such circumstances

I thought the commentary/narration was 'over the top' at times - I didn't realise I was part of such a relationship straining pastime, how selfish of me
Cheers,

Wayne

Another old R/C video has appeared on the BBC archive on Facebook. Whoever does the BBC archive obviously like R/C as it's about the 4th video to appear this year.

I believe it was the very first time R/C model flying was featured on TV.
I've tried & failed, I even got the BMFA to speak to them, I begged John Noakes's agent but they wouldnt let me contact him. :D
Hi Phil

I've messaged them, but do not hold much hope. The BBC wiped most episodes of Blue Peter (and other programs such as Dads Army etc) as recording tapes were so expensive. After a few years, they simply wiped and re-used them for other programs.

So unless somebody made and kept their own recording then it's probably been lost for good. If somebody had recorded it, I would have thought it would have turned up on YouTube by now?

For the record, these are the video clips the BBC have put on their archive:

I remember that Channel Crossing video well! Back then, I was working for the BBC as a videotape engineer, and we covered both that rehearsal, and the actual crossing for "Nationwide" at Lime Grove, which is where I think that clip came from.

Unfortunately the crossing didn't go too well. Two teams attempted it at the same time - I think the other team was either French or German, I can't recall after all this time. They succeeded, but alas, Dave Nieman's ended in disaster when his engine failed before he'd even reached the coast proper. The heli just dropped out of sight without warning, and as far as I know, was never recovered!

:(
