I got a crystal earpiece, (which I haven't used yet), and also a cheapo £7 am/fm radio off fleabay, and after tuning my 'good' RCS transmitter to 108mhz I did indeed hear a tone on pressing the button! Fascinating!
I found a broken leg on a transistor on my inoperative RCS tx, as well as a dodgy wire, so once I've repaired it, normal (50 year old) service may well resume!
I wish I really knew how it all works...
