Used the little black usbttl adaptor for yonks to program the prominis with no problem, still works on my old stock items.
Bought a new batch the other day and problems programming, just would not load up.
Re-loaded the bootloader but no luck there either.
Finally problems disappeared by using a clone FT232 unit.
Might be helpful to some if this comes up in future.
So what is different?

What chip on the USB uart?
CH340, CP2102, CP2104, PL2303 ...?
There is much crap around ....
The left one ist stamped FTDI, but reports as a PL2303 and the one on the right has the label on the chip removed,
is a CP2102, but works only erratic.
And with your 'clone FT232', I would be careful. The original FTDI is programmable an can be checked and programmed with a tool from FTDI.
Maybe you give it a try with your 'clone FT232',

Re: So what is different?
No worries, I'll stick with the FT232BL (red unit) as I had to install FT drivers to get it to work and it works repeatedly without a fail.
Tried it around 20 times now.
