They're covered in lightweight esaki jap tissue. I've changed my covering technique over the last few years where I used to use the time honoured method of a couple of coats of 50/50 dope thinners over the entire framework (everything that will contact tissue including all ribs) and bleed thinners through with a brush and rubbing down with your thumbs etc. Nowadays I use the gluestick method where you coat everything with a glue stick (UHU stik is popular but I get along fine with a cheapo brand from the $2 shop) and apply tissue dry as before. To shrink, if it's a delicate structure, I merely pass the component through the steam from a kettle and pin down to dry but more often than not I spray the tissue with a spray bottle. Never used Heavyweight Jap tissue, if I want a strong covering I use doculam and tissue. Doculam is sooooo pleasant to apply, way better than any of the heatshrink coverings and if you use the matt version there's no need to etch the surface to get the dope to stick.
