Ponty this year

Post by Shaun »

Ok fellow retro devotees.

Just 2 weeks to go.. Excellent weather booked so you have little time to fettle your wares in preparation for our 9th event.

See you there.

I've been building a few Veron Mini Robots - traditional build but not using balsa (sorry) - have made reduced 26" versions - one EPP, one 2mm depron, one 6mm depron - and trying a blue foam version (well black foam)

All builds on kitchen table and balsa just makes too much dust for the other three members of the family...

Radio will be Jumper lite with a button added so can run the compound s/c emulator

Different outrunners for each

Remember flying an original mid 70s with a DC Spitfire (bit big) and Futaba s/c - remember it as being very pitch stable

Sorry now not going to make Ponty (unwell parent) but aiming to fly at least one mini Robot on Sunday in solidarity

Ponty the Kiwi way...

While not on the scale of the real(?) Ponty, today we managed a Kiwi & an Aussie participating virtually in an English event in abnormally good winter weather 'down under', in Australia's far eastern islands (aka New Zealand) :o

We both had electric gliders - 2m Radians - but the real fun was had with the retro stuff! Brian had his Buzzard Bombshell fitted with an O.S. 40 Surpass F/S and guided by a JR Max 7(?) circa early 1980's, on 40MHz and using one of Barry's custom made stumpy antennas.

Brian also channeled some long lost Yorkshire frugality when several of his rubber bands broke and he had no replacements...

I test flew an Ali Express purchase called the Long Sheng 800 - it used 2 cells - a 1000mah Turnigy nano-tech, an 1808 out-runner and a 4ch. version of Phil's lockdown FHSS project. The tx was an old Futaba and the rx was built using a RF-Nano.

It was sprightly at full power, looping from level flight with kick-up elevator! The nano-tech pack provided 3 good flights/charge. The 800 needs some thrust line adjustments, but for under NZ$40 landed in NZ, it appears to give great value.

Not the best of videos (why don't today's mobile phones come with a view finder? they have everything else :P ), but the grins & the blue sky tell the story!
