RC Pattern videos from the early 60's

Post by MJF »

Thought perhaps you might like to see some old videos I found on You tube of pattern flying in the early 60's by the Detroit RC club.
Interesting to see the old radios and some very early proportional. An ARF free zone at the time!

This is three parts.
Parts 2 & 3 include footage from the 1962 British FAI Championships.

The films are of course no more than a few personal promotional films by the Brett and Winter family, board members of the RCCD. If we look at the historical data of Great Lakes, later Detroit Invitational, we see that neither gentleman ever won an Invitational,
1953 - JIM PEPINO - LONDON, ONTARIO
1954 - L.D. CRISP - PERRYSVILLE, INDIANA
1955 - HAROLD DEBOLT - BUFFALO NEW YORK
1956 - JIM GALL - TOLEDO, OHIO
1957 - ED KAZMARSKI - CALUMET CITY, ILLINOIS
1958 - ED KAZMARSKI - CALUMET CITY, ILLINOIS
1959 - ED KECK - ROCHESTER, NEW YORK
1960 - BOB DUNHAM - LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
1961 - ED KAZMARSKI - CALUMET CITY, ILLNOIS
1962 - ED KAZMARSKI - CALUMET CITY, ILLNOIS
The Taurus that Ed Kazmirski flew during the competition in 1962 became known with a number of modifications, first in December 1962 by circulating construction drawings made by Ed and Frank Meyers in the Chicago area among friends and acquaintances and then as a construction kit for Top Flite in imitation the Orion.
A piece of history of the SAC.
One evening early in January 1963, Ralph C. Skogh and a group of flyers met at Frank Meyer’s house in Park Forest, Illinois. According to Ralph, “The purpose was to form a Radio Control (RC) model club with an AMA charter. Then the second Monday of that January, the Suburban Aeroclub of Chicago (SAC) was given birth. Today the SAC membership is over 200 and an AMA leader member club. Carl was one of the first big driving forces to get it organized.
Together they drew up the by-laws, filled out the necessary papers for an AMA charter club and the club was airborne!”

I was able to reconstruct the Detroit Invitational model after receiving copies of many of Ed's personal photos from his estate after his passing in December 2007.
