Model flying ban for over two weeks for many clubs around Birmingham.

Post by Martin »

The government have banned all model and full size flying (exempting military and large passenger jets) for a large area surrounding Birmingham from July 22nd to August 9th "to ensure the safety of the Commonwealth Games". :x

Unbelievably, this also includes control-line flying, though the BMFA are still trying to negotiate an exemption for that. The BMFA have tried to negotiate exemptions for model clubs in the area, but unsuccessfully. The release says that individual model flyers may attempt to obtain permission from the police, but that "all such requests will be denied."

Luckily for me, one of the local clubs I fly at is just outside the area, but I know of several clubs that fall inside it.

Another example of unnecessary regulatory overreach. I fear we will see more and more and more of this kind of thing - it's another step down the slippery slope that leads, ultimately, towards a total ban on our safe and harmless hobby.
