I'd be interested to know how he was ever going to ever get far enough up to see the curvature of the planet, but fair play, he had an idea, brought it to life, and tried his best.
He was trying to prove an odd theory, but the aviation pioneers from Da Vinci onwards would have been thought of as mad, but without them...?
