1958 Peacemaker

Post by stuart mackay »

Just finishing off the rebuild of my PAW 19 powered Peacemaker, rebuild required following an abrupt stop following a vertical landing (!) which was the last part of a looping manoevre started two feet too low in altitude which snapped the wing.

Wing has been pieced back together requiring new centre ribs and with spruce spars spliced into the original hard balsa items.
Decided to go iron on tex covering route instead of the original nylon and making it a bit more colourful with yellow glosstex leftovers from the Rudder Bug wings.

Got the wing covered in glosstex which was about 10 grammes heavier than the nylon it replaced so hopefully CG will not prove too problematic. Epoxied and dowel pinned onto the fuselage and now going to get the wing/fuz joint filled and get some glosstex on the fuselage.

Where is the 'like' button when you need it?
A big like, anyway.
On trainers we'd use for teaching CL, 'tex' has been the preferred covering for ages now.
The 'bounce resistance' proved equal to or even better than nylon.
With a PAW 19, I'd prefer lines about 55' but with reflexes quick enough, the golden FAI standard of 15.92 m (10 laps equal 1 km) will do just fine.

Thanks Bruno!
Got the model finished off this evening and will do a "reveal" of the model tomorrow, with photos taken in the midst of Storm Christoph, so watch this space!

So managed to get some good light this morning to take some piccies of the Peacemaker

Finished weight 550 g or 19 ounces.

Balances bang on where it should do (slighly in front of main spar and outboard of fuselage), so no excuses not to make a racket with it now! :D :D

Fuse and wing finished on glosstex with ferrari red Oratrim wing stripes to break up the sea of yellowness, tailplane and tips in doped nylon, all gaps, overlaps and trim edges sealed with a coat of thinned dope.

Hope you like?

As good as, or even better than, new... :D

When you're letting it dangle after picking it up by the leadouts,

how's the fuselage?

Horizontal? :| Slightly nose up :o or down? :)

That's why most F2b machines have adjustable lead outs.
But any CL project will benefit (unless it balances right from day one)...

Thanks Bruno for your compliments!

C.G.is exactly on plan position and I did check the lead out position and it hangs slightly nose down when suspended from both lead outs, so pretty sure it is about right!

I have a couple of them; Peacemaker (cream and red one) with a tuned, PAW 15 TBR (bags of power) and a varient sold by a company in Sheffield called the Peacekeeper (yellow & red) that's slightly larger with a new old stock vintage Fuji 19 - Both go extremely well.

I also have an Ironmonger in the build - one of my favourite combat wings https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=5602

The only problem with c/l models I have is my stock of mustard tins is finally running out.

Well Stuart, most important box can be ticked then. It's not very likely now it will come chasing you....
