Ponty this year?

Post by Stew »

Hi all.

I may have missed an announcement, but is there going to be an event at Ponty this year? It would be great to meet some of you in person.

Thanks chaps.

Hi Stew

I'm certain Shaun or Phil will come along and give more details but it's the weekend July 31/Aug 1, with the Saturday as a general electric fly-in and the retro day on Sun Aug 1st. I thought there had been a post to announce it, but can't find it. And I don't think there is any particular theme, anything goes as long as it's retro not just single channel.

Look forward to seeing you all there.

Hi Stew,
Saturday is the Electric only general fly-in for any model type. The exception being IC for control line.

Sunday is the Retro event for any appropriate model type. 1940's to late 1970's as a guide. Control line again and a bring and buy; you'll need your own tables..

Obviously this is subject to any Covid laws that may be implemented in the future and prevent us from running it.

Cheers,

Shaun.

Ah great. There's one for the diary then, fingers crossed!

Just out of interest, am I right in thinking in years past there have been 'have-a-go' control line sessions? I may be wrong in thinking that, but if anyone is willing to let me do a few laps, with something really docile, I'd love to give it a go. I had a profile mustang c/l model in the 80's, with an Enya 09, and a some kind of profile stunter with a thunder tiger 25, but that was a loooong time ago, and I never got much practice before moving on to 50cc motorbikes, as you do...

Anyhoo, if anyone is willing to show me the ropes (or indeed lines..!) again, I'd be up for that, or perhaps I might have time to put something together myself, I'd still need a bit of tuition though...

Stew..

It depends on who is there running the c/l circle.
If Dave's there there's a good chance but you could easily knock up a profile, sheet wing model in 2 hrs. Floor varnish to finish it. I can bring lines and a handle for you to use but only have 50ft lines. I would suggest using a 2.5 - 3.5 cc motor for model size .
Hundreds of free plans available from the usual sources.

I can give you some help flying...👍

Be careful, Stew! A couple of years back, I had a go with one of their "trainers"! I flew C/L for many years when I was younger, and taught my kids to fly c/l as well, so I wasn't expecting any issues, even though I was out of practice.

My instructor - on hearing I had some c/l experience - asked if I wanted to take it off. Very trusting of him, I thought! I took him up on his offer, only to discover that his idea of a "trainer" was my idea of a hot aerobatic job! :o

The first lap was a real roller coaster, but I managed to get it calmed down by the second and completed the flight without incident. I even managed to pull off a decent landing and walk out of the circle in a (relatively) straight line!

So beware of their "trainers". At the very least, make sure you are wearing bicycle clips...!

They make 'em 'ard in Yorkshire! :D

Think Electric.
With a timer, you don't have to wait for an indeterminate time while the tank runs out, then subsequent sorties can get progressively longer when you desensitise. With RC throttle control you can stop as soon as you feel unwell or if it is all happening too fast.
The only 'get out of grief' with IC is if you have the ability to fly continuous horizontal 8s - unlikely with a beginner !

Suitable setups available from Dens' Models down in the Isle of Wight. https://www.densmodelsupplies.co.uk/ind ... ntrol_line
His cl timers were developed by the late Alan Bond (was "afb" on this forum). Manufacture continues

Cheers chaps, that's great, I'll certainly give electric some thought. Never done electric C/L but it seems a good way to get back into it before upping the stakes a bit.

Just a quick update.

Everything is still on for Ponte ..

There will be a trader coming who specialises in traditional modelling items (balsa, dope, nylon, tissue etc) and I believe new, old stock kits.

Remember to bring your own food and drink though. The BBQ isn't available this year.

If you are camping/ caravanning please could you let me (Shaun) know so I can get a handle on the numbers.

Wez is coming again to run some low key , fun comps.

See you all there,

Shaun & Phil
